The Ruhrgebiet, or Ruhr area (named after the Ruhr River), is Germany’s largest urban post‑industrial region shaped by its coal and steel heritage. Many former factories and mines have since been transformed into cultural spaces, parks, and innovation hubs. Last weekend, I visited this exciting region—many years after studying at the University of Duisburg‑Essen.
